B.C. Liberal Credibility Gap Grows As More Questions Arise Around Missing Emails

VICTORIA – The disappearance of thousands of email records surrounding the B.C. Rail corruption case is making the B.C. Liberals’ credibility gap even wider, say the New Democrats.

The court heard yesterday that emails most likely to contain specific information Leonard KrogLeonard Krogabout the sale were precisely the ones that have not been found.

“It strains belief,” said New Democrat MLA Leonard Krog , the opposition critic for the Attorney General. “Emails after the sale are available. But emails from the critical period immediately before the sale of B.C. Rail, precisely those most likely to contain relevant and damning information, cannot be found.

“It smacks of a coverup.”

Krog said Premier Gordon Campbell committed to co-operating fully with the investigation and to providing all required information to the courts.

“There is a gap between what the premier promised and what his government has delivered,” said Krog. “The B.C. Liberal government needs to stop stalling and provide the information necessary to move this case forward.”

Krog noted that it is not yet clear why or how these emails were erased, given that government policies regarding the destruction of government documents, including emails, require cabinet ministers’ documents to be retained for a minimum of seven years, with a ten-year requirement for the premier’s office.

Carole James and the New Democrats have called for a public inquiry into the sale of B.C. Rail since the Campbell government pushed through the highly controversial deal, after breaking their promise to keep B.C. Rail in public hands.
