Disappointing Campbell Strata Act Written On A Napkin

VICTORIA - The Campbell government's strata amendment act was put together without public consultation and misses the mark on what's needed for strata owners, says New Democrat housing critic Diane Thorne .

"Strata owners have been asking for protection and comprehensive changes to Diane ThorneDiane Thornethe strata act, but the Campbell government didn't listen and failed to deliver," said Thorne, MLA for Coquitlam-Maillardville. "Once again we see evidence of a government that is out of touch with British Columbians."

Thorne noted that yesterday's bill fails to strengthen licensing requirements for managers, doesn't ensure potential buyers receive full disclosure, and provides no penalties for improper conduct.

"The Campbell government failed to discuss the legislation with groups such as the Vancouver Island Strata Owners Association, and this bill reflects that lack of consultation," said Thorne. "Strata owners and potential buyers are still left with little protection at the end of the day.

"This bill is being introduced just ahead of the election, and likely will be meaningless in the long run."
