HST Increases Treatment Costs For People Suffering From Debilitating Conditions
VANCOUVER - People requiring massage therapy, including patients with multiple sclerosis, are about to suffer even more due to the B.C. Liberals’ HST, said New Democrats today.
Adrian Dix
“The B.C. Liberals are forcing massage therapists to charge the HST, even though patients, advocates, and health care professionals have warned the government that this will have negative and unfair consequences for various groups, including British Columbians who suffer from multiple sclerosis,” said health critic Adrian Dix.
British Columbia law treats registered massage therapists as primary health care providers, and under their care MS patients can experience decreased pain and spasticity, and improved energy. The therapy can also help stall the onset of more symptoms, and further decline.

“Currently, countless MS patients rely on massage therapy across the province, as do other British Columbians suffering from debilitating conditions. Now, with the HST, this government is forcing these patients, many who have limited incomes, to pay even more for a therapy critical to maintaining and prolonging their ability to function independently,” said deputy health critic Sue Hammell.
Starting July 1, registered massage therapists will be required to charge patients the HST, resulting in the cost of treatment rising towards $100/hour.
The New Democrats critics were joined by MS patients and advocates Barbara Claridge, Stephanie Lett and Joan Levi.
Dix noted that health care professionals, patients and advocates have explained the HST's negative consequences to the B.C. Liberal government, but their concerns have been ignored.
“The MS Society raised the HST’s application on massage therapy with the legislature’s finance committee. Cabinet ministers Pat Bell and Colin Hansen even described it as an anomaly. However, patients are left paying the price because this government is allowing the federal Tories to set B.C.’s tax policy, contrary to their commitment not to introduce the HST before the 2009 election,” noted Dix.
Carole James and New Democrats have been holding the B.C. Liberals accountable for breaking their word on the HST, and for backtracking on their election promises to protect health care, education, and other vital services.
