Independent Oversight Of RCMP Overdue, Say New Democrats
VANCOUVER – The Braidwood Inquiry recommendation to implement a civilian-led independent investigative body for the RCMP is overdue and should be implemented without hesitation, say the New Democrats.Mike Farnworth
“New Democrats have said for years that deaths and serious injuries that occur when the RCMP are involved should be investigated independently and by civilians,” said New Democrat public safety and solicitor general critic Mike Farnworth . “It is unfortunate that it took a tragedy like this to finally get the B.C. Liberal government to make a commitment. Now they must deliver.”
Thomas Braidwood delivered his final report today regarding the October 2007 death of Robert Dziekański. Dziekański, a polish man emigrating to Canada, who died shortly after police tackled him to the ground and deployed conducted energy weapons on him.
“Mr. Braidwood and the public have been highly critical of the way the RCMP reacted to Mr. Dziekański after he arrived in Vancouver on a flight from Poland,” said Farnworth.
“Independent investigations into these sorts of incidents will go a long way to reassuring victims, their families and the public that police officers are not operating above the law.”
The Carole James New Democrats will hold the B.C. Liberals to their word and ensure the delivery of a civilian-led investigative body for the RCMP in B.C.
