VICTORIA – New reports out today show that since the HST was implemented on July 1, British Columbians have become increasingly concerned about making ends meet, the New Democrats say.
Consumer confidence is at an all-time low in British Columbia, according to the Conference Board of Canada. B.C. saw the biggest drop in consumer confidence in the country, losing 12.5 points.
VICTORIA – One year ago today, the B.C. Liberal government doublecrossed British Columbians and announced the HST, which shifts $1.9 billion in taxes from big business onto consumers, say the New Democrats.
VICTORIA – The federal government’s decision to do away with the long-form census is causing a firestorm of controversy across Canada, but the B.C. Liberal government is too caught up in scandal to provide leadership on the issue and advocate for British Columbia, say New Democrats.
VICTORIA – The B.C. Liberal government continues to mislead the public on the HST, only now they are using untold millions of taxpayers’ dollars to do it, say New Democrats.
VICTORIA – Still outraged by the B.C. Liberals’ HST deception, British Columbians are now facing a publicly funded government propaganda campaign.
“Residents and small business owners in every corner of the province have clearly said no to the HST,” said Bruce Ralston, New Democrat finance critic. “No amount of glossy pamphlets or advertisements will change that position.
VANCOUVER – Small business owners joined Carole James and the New Democrats today to highlight the negative impact of the HST and call on the B.C. Liberals to stop the HST.
VICTORIA – Despite the frantic attempts of both the federal and provincial governments to blame each other for the HST, the B.C. Liberals could call up the federal government and negotiate an end to the tax, New Democrats say.
VANCOUVER – Gordon Campbell should take the opportunity at his annual fundraiser tonight to listen to British Columbians and scrap the HST, the New Democrats say.
“British Columbians are angry over the B.C. Liberals’ HST double-cross,” said New Democrat finance critic Bruce Ralston. “Tonight is as good a time as any for the premier to announce he will call up the prime minister and say B.C. wants out of the HST.”
VICTORIA – New Democrats are vowing to fight the B.C. Liberals’ Clean Energy Act in the legislature this week. The bill would allow $10 billion in spending without appropriate public oversight, remove consumer protection from unnecessary hydro rate hikes and shift more of British Columbians’ money into the hands of private power companies, say New Democrats.
VICTORIA – The B.C. Liberal chair of the legislative committee that decides the fate of the HST initiative might attempt to thwart the will of British Columbians by declaring the petition “invalid”, New Democrats said today.
