MLA Don McRae Mocks HST Opponents In Legislature

VICTORIA – Comox Valley MLA Don McRae proved just how out of touch he is with his constituents yesterday during debate in the legislature about HST-enabling legislation, say New Democrats.Claire TrevenaClaire Trevena

“It was quite offensive to listen to Mr. McRae today. He showed just how disconnected he is with the people of the Comox Valley as he defended the B.C. Liberals’ move to force the HST on British Columbians,” said Claire Trevena , New Democrat MLA for the North Island.

During his speech, McRae said “I know the economy [of the North Island] isn’t built on coffee and haircuts.” He later targeted other opponents of the HST, referring to “little old ladies in Kelowna” and “a bike store owner in Nelson.”

“Apparently Mr. McRae didn’t notice when a bike store right in his own city held an anti-HST event, or maybe he’s forgotten about the nearly 1000 signatures on an anti-HST petition he received after a bike rally to his office,” said Trevena, noting that nearly everyone she talks to in the valley is strongly opposed to the HST.

“With such strong opposition in the Comox Valley – especially in the restaurant and tourism sectors – it was surprising to listen to him write off the importance of small business owners like coffee shops and hairdressers,” said Trevena.

Only seven B.C. Liberal MLAs would need to vote against the HST legislation to stop the tax. Carole James and the New Democrats continue to stand by their promise, and will vote against the HST.
