MLA JAGRUP BRAR TO TAKE ON RAISE THE RATES WELFARE CHALLENGE
Jagrup Brar, MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood, has accepted the Raise the Rates challenge to live on welfare for a month. He will start on January 1, 2012, spending part of the month in Surrey and part in Vancouver.
Brar is working with Raise the Rates, a coalition concerned about poverty, inequality and homelessness in British Columbia.
The announcement was made on Monday, November 28, at Surrey Urban Mission.
Brar will survive on $610 a month, the income assistance amount designated for a single person who is expected to work.
He will continue to carry out his responsibilities as MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood, including holding regular office hours at his constituency office during the month of January.
