MLA Mungall Defends Constituents From B.C. Liberal HST Onslaught

VICTORIA – New Democrat MLA for Nelson-Creston Michelle Mungall went to bat for her constituents in the legislature after a B.C. Liberal attack on residents of Nelson and Kelowna earlier this week. Michelle MungallMichelle Mungall

The attack was issued by Comox Valley MLA Don McRae during debate on HST-enabling legislation. McRae targeted opponents of the HST, making reference to “little old ladies in Kelowna” and “a bike store owner in Nelson.” The B.C. Liberal member also took aim at coffee shop owners and hairdressers.

“It is just so unbelievable to listen to the B.C. Liberals openly going after the people who elected them. More than 80 per cent of British Columbians are opposed to the HST – and for good reason – it will shift $1.9 billion in taxes from big corporations onto the backs of individuals, families, and small businesses,” said Mungall.

In her debate yesterday, Mungall rebutted McRae’s remarks and reiterated that the HST is a result of the B.C. Liberals’ broken promise during the election.

“This is what British Columbians know all over the province, including the vivacious, wise “little old ladies in Kelowna,” and the entrepreneurial and intelligent bike shop owners in Nelson,” she told the legislature, referring to McRae’s inflammatory remarks.

“Unlike the member for Comox Valley, I’ve spoken to countless British Columbians about the HST, and I haven’t met one person who likes it – not one. Senior women have legitimate concerns, and bike shop owners have been loud and clear… they are not alone,” she continued.

Only seven B.C. Liberal MLAs would need to vote against the HST legislation to stop the tax. Carole James and the New Democrats continue to stand by their promise, and will vote against the HST.
