New Democrats Call On Campbell Government To Ensure First Nations School Is Protected

VICTORIA - The NDP is calling on the Campbell government to take steps to ensure that the successful Nala' atsi Aboriginal high school program in Courtenay is maintained.

"I've heard from people in Courtenay who are very concerned that plans to relocated Nala' atsi from the Wachiay Friendship Centre could threaten the future of this important high school program," says NDP Aboriginal relations critic Scott FraserScott FraserScott Fraser

"The Wachiay Friendship Centre tells me they were completely surprised to hear a decision had been made to move the high school program out of the centre with zero consultation," says Fraser, the MLA for Alberni-Qualicum.

Wachiay fears that if the program is moved it will greatly jeopardize the success of the program and possibly end it all together.

Fraser noted the program has been operating the Nala' atsi high school program within the Friendship Centre for the last eight years.

"If the Campbell government believed in building a new relationship of trust with First Nations they would be taking the necessary steps to ensure these types of programs are maintained and well funded," Fraser said.
