New Democrats Call On Campbell To Reverse Decision To Cut Vital Service For Vulnerable Sex Trade Workers
VANCOUVER – The New Democrats are calling on Gordon Campbell to reverse a decision that will eliminate a key service for Vancouver sex trade workers effective tomorrow.
WISH Drop-In Centre’s co-operated mobile access van, which has provided essential outreach services to sex
Jenny Kwan trade workers since 2004, will no longer be in service tomorrow if the government doesn’t provide immediate funding.
”The Premier has no problems finding money for an expanded cabinet, but he can’t find funding for a vital service that improves safety for some of our most vulnerable citizens,” said Jenny Kwan , MLA for Vancouver Mt. Pleasant.
“It’s appalling that Premier Campbell hid his plans to impose cuts to vital services until after the election,” she said. “But now that the election is over, the cuts are coming and B.C.’s most vulnerable citizens are paying the price.”
Kwan said the Mobile Access Project is paramount to providing outreach for the most marginalized women in our society.
“It provides support workers, access to safety, resources and health supplies to women working the streets at night,” she said.
