New Democrats Call On Campbell To Stop Blocking Frank Paul Inquiry
VICTORIA – Facing tough questions from New Democrat MLAs in the legislature today, the Campbell government refused to back down on the legal roadblocks stalling the Frank Paul inquiry.
"The family of Mr. Paul, his friends, and the community want closure. They deserve
Jenny Kwananswers, not stonewalling,” said Jenny Kwan , New Democrat MLA for Vancouver-Mount Pleasant.
The interim report by Commissioner William Davies was finally released today after the Campbell government sat on it for four weeks. Davies said the full and final report could not be completed because “The [Attorney General’s] Ministry commenced legal proceedings challenging Mike Farnworthmy jurisdiction to inquire into its activities in the Frank Paul matter.”
Today in question period Kwan asked Attorney General Wally Oppal to “commit today to end the legal barriers, to stop the stonewalling, and allow this commission to complete its work."
When Oppal refused to answer, she said “Commissioner Davies – a respected judge -- ruled that he had the authority to fully investigate. This ruling was upheld by another respected B.C. Supreme Court Judge.
“Two judges have ruled on this,” said Kwan. “Isn’t this enough for the government?”
“I am very disturbed that this government won’t answer the question about enacting recommendations of the report,” New Democrat public safety critic Mike Farnworth said after question period. “They’re stalling on action and they’re stalling on the inquiry.
