New Democrats join Ktunaxa Nation and Niedermayer in call to protect Jumbo
New Democrat leader Adrian Dix, MLAs Michelle Mungall and Norm Macdonald joined the Ktunaxa Nation and acclaimed hockey player Scott Niedermayer yesterday to press the case for why the government should cancel the Jumbo Glacier Resort proposal.
Local communities, including the Ktunaxa, oppose this particular development on the grounds that it, compared to other proposals, does not meet the test of being financially feasible, and will have adverse effects for the region's eco system. For example, a new independent report prepared by Dr. Marvin Schaffer reconfirms that this proposal will not render appreciable economic gains for the region while it will adversely impact the environment. Niedermayer, who is from the Kootenays and has been a vocal champion of the Jumbo Valley, expressed yesterday at the legislature "there are few areas like this left in the world, and we should preserve it for future generations. I want my children and all British Columbians to be able to enjoy this area, just as I am able to."
