New Democrats welcome A Walk for a Wish to B.C. legislature

Opposition MLAs, including social development critic Carole James and children and families critic Claire Trevena, welcomed Janine Annett to the legislature May 3. Janine, a 15-year-old student from Quadra Island, walked the length of Vancouver Island - more than 500 km from Port Hardy to Victoria - over the course of a month to raise awareness and money for the issue of child poverty.

Janine raised money along the way to donate to help build a school in India, while raising awareness about child poverty right here at home.

B.C. has had the highest rate of child poverty in Canada for eight years in a row, something New Democrats have commited to change.

You can view Janine’s arrival at the legislature in a short video.

And watch Claire Trevena’s statement in the legislature later that day as Janine and her supporters watched from the gallery.
