FALL LEGISLATIVE SESSION

The fall sitting of the legislature has come to a close. B.C. New Democrats raised serious issues and proposed realistic, practical solutions on key priorities such as inequality, post-secondary education and training, and building a sustainable economy.

New Democrats worked cooperatively with the Liberal government on legislation that will make a positive difference, such as the Family Law Act and the Nurse Practitioner Act, and introduced legislation where the Liberals have failed to act, including a poverty reduction strategy and a bill that would strengthen private college regulation and student protections.

NEW DEMOCRATS CONTINUE TO RAISE IMPORTANT ISSUES

New Democrat MLAs have been very busy since the end of the fall legislative session.

Raj Chouhan and Adrian Dix called for a coroner’s inquest to be held into the deaths of mushroom farm workers after the farm operators were sentenced this week.

John Horgan and Rob Fleming introduced positive proposals to ensure environmental protection and long-term sustainability in B.C.’s natural gas industry.  Rob also drew attention to a report released this week that shows the environmental risk to B.C. from the Alberta tar sands pipeline and tankers on the North Coast are too great.

Gary Coons questioned whether B.C. Ferries is breaking the Liberals’ own laws by hitting travellers with doubled ‘fuel surcharge’ fare increase.

New Democrats also issued a statement on World AIDS Day, highlighting British Columbia’s leadership in HIV/AIDS research . The full statement can be found here.
