Statement from Harry Lali

Yesterday, I told the media that I supported the recommendations of the MLA Compensation Panel. This was a statement that contradicted the consensus position arrived at by the NDP Caucus and Leader Carole James last Tuesday.

I also stated publicly that I would be supporting legislation that the Campbell Liberals have indicated will be introduced in coming days.

My public statement also contradicted the caucus agreement to await the legislation in order to review it before collectively arriving at a decision regarding a response.

As I have a great deal of respect for my caucus colleagues I want to sincerely apologize to them for breaking this agreement and offending them.

I have also heard from a number of my constituents via telephone, email and in-person, many of whom did not agree with my public position and were offended.

I also ask for their understanding and apologize to my constituents and supporters in Yale-Lillooet, who I respect greatly, and from whom I have taken direction for 12 years as their MLA.

I have always been and remain supportive of the Leader and NDP Caucus’ collective work in opposing the Campbell Liberal government – a government that is ignoring Rural British Columbians and the people who live in my constituency.

I have spoken to Carole and a number of my caucus colleagues personally to convey my apologies, and through this statement I convey my apologies to all my caucus colleagues as well.
