Suburban B.C. Hit Hard By ICBC

VANCOUVER – As ICBC hits suburban drivers with the biggest increase to basic auto insurance rates in the province, New Democrat Leader Carole James says the latest hike is a cash grab on people trying to make ends meet in the suburbs.

Carole JamesCarole James"In May, ICBC rates will be going up as high as six percent in the Fraser Valley, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Pemberton and Hope for all drivers despite their safe driving record," said James. "People live in these areas because it’s more affordable and now they’re faced with the highest insurance increases in the province."

Last week, ICBC announced increases to premiums in areas with higher than average accidents rates.

“ICBC rates have been skyrocketing ever since the Campbell government took over,” said NDP ICBC Critic Harry Lali. Harry LaliHarry Lali

“Despite the Corporation's reported $300 million surplus last year, the B.C. Liberals continue to empower ICBC to gouge motorists so they can use it as a cash cow.”

This news follows the B.C. Utilities Commission approval last week of ICBC’s request to charge $25 per non-principal driver per B.C. household.
