John Horgan was elected as the MLA for Malahat-Juan de Fuca on May 17, 2005, and re-elected to the reconfigured riding of Juan de Fuca on May 12, 2009.
John serves as Opposition House Leader and Opposition Critic for energy, mines and petroleum resources.
Born and raised in Victoria, John is well-known as a strong voice for the communities of the West Shore and along the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
An approachable representative, local businesses and families from all walks of life know they can count on John to raise their issues and fight for solutions, whether in education, affordable housing, health care, protecting local jobs, or the cost of living.
When the government released thousands of acres of land from a public tree farm licence, John gave voice to the wave of public concern, and he has been working with community groups to protect green space and liveability in the region.
John is a strong advocate for transportation alternatives, and together with community groups and other elected officials is working to bring commuter rail to Langford, including convincing the legislature’s bipartisan Finance Committee to come out in support of this important initiative.
As official opposition education critic, John worked with parents, teachers and administration to try and address growing class sizes and the challenges of class composition.
As energy critic, John travelled the province to fight to keep public rivers in public hands, while keeping electricity rates affordable for families and businesses.
